Creating Multiple Gender Reflection for our Children in Popular Media

Description: Imagine opening the paper and the next must-see movie is about a young child on an amazing journey to understand their true gender! Seem impossible? The truth is you can have that now. We can learn to support ourselves and our children to see through the binary gender system so prevalent in our current culture and its media, right through to the reality of gender expression in all its multiplicity!

The potential to expand our perceptions and acknowledge possibility exists in every book, in every movie, in every moment. When we understand the reality of gender we can redefine beyond what we have been taught. Once our eyes are open, we cannot help but see. In this presentation/discussion we explore the importance of seeing ourselves reflected in our immediate and larger environments and practice ways to acknowledge and embrace the endless gender possibilities in our world to support our children.

Learning Objectives:

UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF REFLECTION:
- Explore and personally contextualize the reality of current media reflection in relation to gender as well as body image, people of color, sexuality, class, etc. (this includes books, magazines, television, movies, billboards, advertising, etc…)
- Understand the effect and power of relevant media reflection.
ACQUIRE TOOLS TO PUT INTO PRACTICE:
- Learn ways to adapt available media to better acknowledge and reflect multiple gender expression for all of our children.
- Learn ways to support and empower our children to create their own reflection and further enhance their sense of self and belonging in the world.
OVERALL INTENTION:
- Support and empower our children to be exactly who they are inside and out
- Support our children to create an internal sense of knowing self and belonging that cannot be overrun by external influences that may try to say that one’s true self is wrong or does not belong

Target Audience: This kind of workshop is generally geared toward parents and educators. While parents or educators of gender fluid or trans children can find this very useful in supporting their children, it is not limited to only that audience. Anyone with a desire to bring awareness and expansion to gender and want to discover tools to helping their children retain their open minds towards open gender expression can benefit from this workshop. Additionally, we also provide workshops for gender fluid and trans children using the tools of Claiming Face to empower them to be exactly who they are in a world that often tries to tell them not to.
