Videos on Books & Classroom Visits
About this video:
Maya Gonzalez and Children's Book Press at the 2008 Green Festival in San Francisco. In this video created by Children's Book Press, Maya talks with Dana Goldberg about her art for Animal Poems of the Iguazú. We also watch her interact with children during an art project that uses the same cut paper and paint process she did for this book.
Maya: I do this purposefully a lot with my books, where children can actually see the process if they look at the page very closely. I don't want art to be a mystery to them. I want it to be very accessible where literally a kid could look at this and be like, oh, well here's a piece of paper and here's another cut piece of paper so she glued this one down and then this one and then painted on top of them.
About Animal Poems of the Iguazú: Following the Amerindian oral tradition, award-winning Chicano poet Francisco X. Alarcón lets the animals of the Iguazú speak for themselves in their own soaring, roaring, fluttering voices, and the resulting poems are as urgent as they are beautiful and humorous. Maya Christina Gonzalez’s mixed media illustrations bring the colors and textures of the Iguazú rainforest to vibrant life.
