Videos on Books & Classroom Visits
About this video:
Maya talks with elementary school students about the "secrets" in her books. Ever since someone asked her whether she ever hides anything in her books, she has been using every opportunity to "hide secrets" in her books because she is keenly aware that children are very perceptive and will notice all the subtleties and messages in her art. She uses these "secrets" as an opportunity to add greater depth to the words of the story.
As she likes to tell children, "look closely at the art in books, you will often find that there is a story within the art beyond what the words convey." She also enjoys using her books as opportunities to dismantle limiting beliefs about what is and what is not art. As her second rule states: There is never a right or wrong way to make art!
