Creative Workshops

Workshops with Maya are all about art, creativity and exploring the self and are available for both children and adults. In our children’s workshops, Maya leads the children in various hands-on art projects related to art from her different books that are both enjoyable as well as empowering. These workshops are geared toward assisting children in developing a relationship with the creative process and encouraging them to embody her First Rule: "Everyone is an artist". Maya leading children in an art workshopIn fact, our Claiming Face™ Educator's Guide is based off of the work Maya has done in these workshops with children. Sometimes Maya will bring left over materials from the creation of her books for the children to use in their projects. At time of scheduling, we can decide together the type and length of project and what art supplies you will need to have on hand. Generally these workshops are between 25-120 students and 1-3 workshops per day. Here's what Maya has to say about a recent children’s workshop:

“Recently I did a workshop with 120 students. It was incredible when everyone held up their pieces at the same time. I felt like I was surrounded by a sea of creativity!”

Our adult workshops cultivate and travel deeper into the concepts set forth in Claiming Face. In these workshops, Maya guides participants in experiential art projects that focus on presence and process as a way to build the powerful link between creativity and a sense of self. These enriching experiences expand on the philosophy of Claiming Face and its distillation into The 3 Rules. They offer participants the opportunity to develop their own creative power. To participate in these workshops, you don’t need to consider yourself artistic, simply open, curious, and have a desire to experience the powerful effects of what it's like to claim your own face. As a background for these workshops, Maya shares her experiences working with children in the classroom since 1996 and her own experience as a child of color.

Her adult workshops are usually geared to specific audiences, such as educators, women, student-teachers, the LGBT community, and more. Maya provides a model of personal presence, guided exercises and projects, and, for educators, how to navigate a supportive and reflective classroom environment. The goal is to support educators in first empowering themselves creatively, so that they can in turn, empower their students. Occasionally, we offer these workshops as a weekend retreat or weekly workshop series in San Francisco. Maya will be coordinating a series for women, Women Claiming Face, in the Summer 2010. Please contact us if you are interested in any of these workshop opportunities.
